Herbst appliance treatment of Class II malocclusions after after growth spurt. 2008;1(1); 18-26. Class II malocclusion features a high prevalence in Brazil, becoming a routine in orthodontic clinics. A number of appliances are depicted in the literature in order to correct Class II malocclusion with mandibular retrusion. Herbst’s fi xed functional appliance, idealized by Emil Herbst in1905 and reintroduced, in the 1980’s, by Hans Pancherz (1) is outstanding for it maintains the mandible advanced in a continuous mode, requires a shorter time of active treatment, has immediate esthetic impact on facial profi le, and no need for patient’s commitment (2). Recent research studies indicate the use of this appliance in individuals after the pubertal growth surge. The objective of the present study is to show the orthodontic clinician the option to use this appliance when treating Class II malocclusion in individuals after the growth surge, obtaining satisfactory outcomes and Class II correction.
