Simplifying dental adhesive systems

Vol. 12 – Number 48 – 2021 NOTEBOOK OF CLINICAL DENTISTRY Review article Page 89-94 Simplifying dental adhesive systems Halim Nagem Filho1 Haline Drumond Nagem2 Nasser Hussein Fares3 Sergio Vieira4 Fabiana Madalozzo Coppla5 Abstract The modifications in the adhesive systems aim to simplify the adhesion steps more and more, thus reducing the failures caused by the operator. The newest eighth generation adhesives are the so-called universal adhesives that can be applied according to the dentist’s personal choice in the complete ER or SE bonding modes, or in the combined mode involving selective ER. Universal adhesives can be used in three ways: self-etching, total acid conditioning, and selective acid conditioning in enamel. The conventional three-stage adhesive system is considered the gold standard for having excellent performance in the formation of the hybrid layer and in the useful life of the restoration. The self-etching system is clinically reliable when used in the 2-step system, which does not occur with the application of 1 step. Universal adhesives are promising materials due to their simplification and versatility, and can be used both as conventional and self-etching. Despite the current trend to simplify the adhesive system, there may be a loss in efficiency of the hybrid layer with a reduction in the service life of the restoration.
