ABSTRACT
The smile can express many feelings and sensations, becoming a fundamental factor for the image of the individual and increasing the requirement in relation to aesthetics. An aesthetically acceptable smile should be harmonious as to the set teeth, lips and gum tissue. Concerning to gum, exposing a wide range while smiling is considered rather aesthetic and characterized as a gingival smile. When the etiologic factor is muscular hyperfunction a treatment option is the application of botulinum toxin type A in the muscles responsible for elevation of the upper lip. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate clinically the efficacy of botulinum toxin application for gingival smile correction and the benefits provided to the individual through this technique. The analysis of the patient’s smile was performed and observed 4 mm gingival exposure, locating the point of application on the side of the nose wing in the muscular component of the upper lip lift muscles, upper lip lift and the wing of the nose and lower zygomatic and injected 4UI botulinum toxin type A bilaterally. The result of the treatment was satisfactory, because the gingival exposure reduced considerably. And the patient was satisfied.
