Objective: To compile important findings in the literature about the indication of botulinum toxin in the treatment of masseteric hypertrophy. Method: An integrative review of the literature of the past 25 years, available in the LILACS, MEDLINE/PubMed and Scielo electronic bases, using the terms “botulinum toxins” AND “masseteric hypertrophy”, and equivalents in Portuguese language. Results: The initial search resulted in 65 papers, which, after filtered and selected, resulted in 12 articles fully read. In general, the articles included in this study reported many benefits and few adverse effects related to toxin therapy. Conclusion: With the constant increase in the use of botulinum toxin for the most diverse medical applications, it is necessary to reflect on the professional responsibility regarding the knowledge of the technique and the capacity to indicate the treatment.
