Vol. 11 – Number 43 – 2020 CLINICAL DENTISTRY NOTEBOOK Systematic review Page 92-98 Sterilisation Diamond burs – Systematic review Nasser Hussein Fares1 Haline Drumond Nagem2 Paulo Rompante3 Ana Margarida Freitas Peixoto Guedes Faria4 ABSTRACT Sterilization or disinfection of diamond surfaces or tips are suitable methods for microbial elimination. The terminologies of agents that act on dental instruments with antimicrobial activities, often bring confusion to dentists. They are broadly used nomenclatures as synonyms. Disinfection: it is a process that eliminates pathogenic microorganisms from inanimate beings, without necessarily reaching the spores. In dentistry, the neutral enzymatic detergent is used. Sterilization is a process that eliminates all microorganisms spores, bacteria, fungi and protozoa. Sterilization means can be physical, such as dry heat (oven) or wet heat (autoclave). In accordance with the results of the systematic review, the conclusions support the indication of cleaning instruments by friction with soap under running water to remove dirt, support that the indication of disinfection of instruments by immersion in enzymatic detergent in the ultrasound is effective, but not eliminates microorganisms, and that sterilization is done by two systems. Dry with oven and wet in autoclave. The stove is contraindicated by Anvisa to sterilize dental instruments. The autoclave is an essential processing for dental practice and offers safe sterilization with the elimination of all microorganisms in dental instruments.
