The construction of the ideal smile is based on measurable objective criteria, which depend on subjective parameters. The majority of smiles considered beautiful are close to, but do not match, golden proportions. Hence, it is important to adapt rules to each individual case, evaluating macroesthetic, periodontal, microesthetic and functional parameters. Detailed planning and predictability through the restorative – mock-up test ease up the selection of the optimal proportion to the patient. This paper gathers three techniques, used to establish the ideal size of maxillary anterior teeth in a single patient. The restorative – mock – up test was performed according to the value found in each analysis, and used upon the patients choice. It concluded that it is not possible to establish a single, general protocol of proportionality to all cases, as it does not exist neither an applicable technique to all patients, nor a definite conception of beauty.
