Clinical Excellence column: Intercuspidation

Vol. 13 – Number 49 – 2020 Clinical Excellence Column Page 10-15 Intercuspation “The race for excellence has no finish line.” David Rye Intercuspation is usually a forgotten stage of orthodontic treatment. There are some reasons for this. The first reason could be lack of time. When the duration of orthodontic treatment is not well managed some important details can be suppressed. Often, due to the patient’s pressure in the face of the already prolonged treatment time, the orthodontist removes the appliances in a hurry, giving up important details such as intercuspation. Another reason may be disinformation or the fact that the orthodontist does not give due importance to this procedure, which can help to significantly improve your clinical results. The purpose of intercuspation is to improve interarch dental relations, promote occlusion settlement, define the quantity and quality of occlusal contacts and contribute to the stability of the case. 1 The better the tooth gearing, the more chances of Class II or Class III corrections, for example, remain stable. An important point to note is that intercuspation is not intended to correct gross errors in racket positioning. Vertical or axial positioning errors should be corrected with bending or repositioning of accessories.
