Retained maxillary canines. Surgical and orthodontic treatment. 2008; 1(1); 7-17. Developing upper permanent canines could be retained due to factors as the complexity of its eruption trajectory and to the fact that they are the last teeth to erupt in the dental arch. Several pathological conditions as odontomas, supernumerary teeth, dental cists and morphological dental anomalies could be other etiological factor of its impaction. The ectopic position of the canines and the lack of the space for them in the dental arch could result in malocclusion. Retained canines can be positioned correctly in the dental arch after surgical interventions followed by orthodontic traction procedures in an Orthodontic and Bucomaxilofacial Surgery integration. In the clinical case presented, the steps for the surgical exposure of the retained canine crown after the recovery of its space in the dental arch and the orthodontic traction were planned and executed following the biological principles resulting in the success of the treatment. KEYWORDS: Retained canine. Corrective orthodontic. Tooth traction.
