For this systematic review, articles published in the period from 2010 to 2020, in Brazilian Portuguese and English were selected from the PubMed online database in accordance with PRISMA recommendations. Exclusion criteria were clinical case reports, conference proceedings abstracts, letters to the editor, atypical abstracts on the topic, and publications that included hypnosis or anxiolytic and/or antidepressant medications. According to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 11 articles were selected. Dental consultation at pediatric ages and anxiety have a positive association, it cannot be neglected, and may be associated with the negative dental experience of parents, mainly of the mother. It is necessary for the clinician to have knowledge and training in the diagnosis of anxiety, in the methodologies for diagnosing anxiety, in the selection, adequacy, and limitations of non-pharmacological behavioral control techniques, including new technologies, and also the indications, contraindications, and limitations of pharmacological behavioral control techniques in the clinic.
