Vol. 13 – Number 50 – 2022 NOTEBOOK OF CLINICAL DENTISTRY Original article Page 112-118 Oral health condition of patients with special needs Davi de Mattos Oliveira¹ Adna Barros Ismerim¹ Adriano Monteiro D’Almeida Monteiro¹ Abstract This study aimed to analyze the oral health condition of patients with special needs (PSN) treated in the interior of Bahia, tracing their clinical-epidemiological profile. It was a cross-sectional, descriptive study, based on secondary data, which, after approval by the Research Ethics Committee, 111 dental records of patients with needs were selected of the municipality of Jequié, since their entry into the system until December 2019. The variables collected involved demographic data, type of special need, therapeutic variables, harmful habits, medications used and index of decayed, missing and filled teeth (DMFT). According to the data obtained, 53.2% of the patients were female and 46.8% were male, with a mean age of 36.4 (± 17.53), varying between 4 and 82 years old, being the types of the most prevalent special needs, systemic disorders with 35.5%, and neurological disorders with 18.9%. Regarding the dental procedures performed in the PSN, the majority (79.2%) underwent rehabilitative or curative treatments. These patients had an average DMFT value of 10.12, with more prevalent oral changes, with dental caries 80.6% and periodontal diseases 54.3%. It can be concluded that the high rates revealed by the DMFT highlight a precarious oral condition in most cases, highlighting the need to implement public policies aimed at the care of these patients.
