Vol. 13 – Number 52 – 2022 NOTEBOOK OF CLINICAL DENTISTRY Original article Page 118-121 Assessment in vitro of different solvents efficiency on gutta-percha F3 Maria Isabel Anastácio Faria de França¹ Débora Cristina de Souza Pinto² Mayara Machado Soldá² Alessandra Timpone Goes Cruz² Egas Moniz de Aragão¹ Alexandre Roberto Heck¹ ABSTRACT The aim of this study is to evaluate, in vitro, the solubilizing ability of different solvents on gutta-percha F3. For this purpose, 100 gutta cones F3 were divided into 5 groups according to the used solvent: xylene, eucalyptol, citrol, orange oil, and distilled water. The cones were weighed and immersed initially placed in the solvents for 15 minutes, after this period the cores were kept in a greenhouse for 48 hours and 37º. Cones were weighed again and settled the average loss for each solvent group. The authors observed that the xylene group had higher mean weight loss, with statistically significant difference for the other groups tested (p<0,0001). Already distilled water (control group) had the lowest average weight loss with a statistically significant difference for the other groups studied. There was no statistically significant difference between the other groups. It was concluded that xylol was the solvent that showed better solvency of the gutta-percha. However, attention should be given to the toxic potential of this material.
