The use of subepithelial pedicled palatal flap associated with bovine mineral matrix in alveolar preservation in an aesthetic area

Vol. 14 – Number 53 – 2022 IMPLANT DENTISTRY NOTEBOOK Case report Page 39-43 The use of subepithelial pedicled palatal flap associated with bovine mineral matrix in alveolar preservation in an aesthetic area Fábio Shiniti Mizutani1 Atila de Freitas2 Victor Hugo Taddeo Nastri3 Patrícia Fretes Wood4 ABSTRACT Ridge resorption resulting from post-extraction alveolar collapse can adversely affect esthetics, function, and future implant placement, particularly in esthetic areas. Immediate grafting of extraction sockets can help preserve the natural contours of the ridge, but the lack of available soft tissue can compromise the final esthetic result. The rotated palatine pedicled connective tissue flap is a useful technique for simultaneous soft tissue coverage and augmentation of grafted sockets to improve the esthetic outcome. They were introduced to increase the thickness of the buccal soft tissues, improve esthetics, and achieve primary closure after alveolar ridge preservation or guided bone regeneration. The main advantage of these approaches is to maintain the vascularity of the flap, which can result in better healing and less retraction than graft-based procedures. Through this case report, we were able to conclude that the rotated pedicle flap of the palate is a useful technique to achieve primary closure combined with soft tissue augmentation over a grafted anterior maxillary extraction site.
