Vol. 12 – Number 48 – 2021 NOTEBOOK OF CLINICAL DENTISTRY Original article Page 75-82 The effect of antioxidant agents on immediate adhesion after whitening Indiana Barbosa Gomes¹ Vanessa Barreiros Gonçalves² Matheus Melo Pithon³ Heitor Cesar Almeida Júnior³ Abstract The objective of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of 10% sodium ascorbate, 10% epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), and 10 mg/ml gel catalase on the shear strength of a restorative system adhesive to bovine enamel whitened with 35% hydrogen peroxide. For this, sixty bovine incisors were randomly distributed in six groups (n=20) according to the treatment: G1: (control) without bleaching, only restoration; G2: bleaching + restoration; G3: bleaching + 10% sodium ascorbate gel + restoration; G4: bleaching + 10 mg/ ml catalase gel + restoration; G5: bleaching + 10% epigallocatechin gallate gel (EGCG) + restoration; and G6: bleaching + restoration after 14 days. The specimens were stored in artificial saliva for 30 days and then submitted to the shear test until failure. The adhesive strength values were analyzed statistically through analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by the application of Turkey parametric test with significance level of 5%. The averages of adhesive strength and standard deviation (MPa + DP) were: G1: 9.97 (± 2.78); G2: 5.94 (± 2.32); G3: 8.84 (± 2.14); G4: 7.75 (± 1.97); G5: 8.64 (± 2.66); and G6: 9.32 (± 2.17). The antioxidant strategies with sodium ascorbate and epigallocatechin gallate allow immediate satisfactory adhesion in bleached teeth, proving to be a viable alternative, waiting for 14 days for the application of the adhesive protocol.
