Orlando Tanaka1 Sergio Luiz Mota Júnior2 Lara Karolina Guimarães3 Ivan Pedro Taffarel4 Robert Willer Farinazzo Vitral5 Introduction In 1987, Dougherty published an editorial in which he argued that new techniques and new appliances are presented daily as if they were the reinvention of the wheel, now square, trademarked, patented and embodied with miraculous qualities¹, and that it remains current in orthodontics. Has the technique of inserting bends in orthodontic arches become obsolete or not in digital-age orthodontics? Are revolutionary bracket prescriptions and “smart” wires for tooth movement available at the click of a mouse the reality? Or, are manual skills and training adequate to perform specific and precisely individualized tooth movements still the basis in some cases in digital-age orthodontics? However, in the various existing techniques or prescriptions with fixed appliance, archwire modifications (such as bends and loops) are required by the orthodontist to achieve the desired result²,³. The multiloop archwire with double helix is efficient for the dental movement towards the occlusion line, particularly of lingually positioned maxillary lateral incisors and canines in crossbite. This Point-of-view aims to explain the technique and illustrate this arch with details through three clinical cases, for a better understanding and application of the stainless steel multiloop arch. 1 Professor, PPGO – PUCPR – School of Life Sciences, Brazilian Board of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics Diplomate. 2 PhD in Health – UFJF, Post-doctoral student – UFJF, Professor of the Specialization Course in Orthodontics – UFJF. 3 MSc and PhD student in Dentistry-Orthodontics – PPGO – PUCPR. 4 Specialist in Orthodontics, Professor of the Specialization Course in Orthodontics – PUCPR, Diplomate of the Brazilian Board of Orthodontics and Facial Orthopedics. 5 Professor – UFJF.
